Many years ago, I was a criminal justice reporter for a Texas newspaper. The pay was crap, but it was otherwise a terrific job. My parents, living 1,400 miles away, subscribed, paying extra to have the paper delivered via US Mail. They wanted to support my efforts and the publication putting food on my table.
