Our Cat Will Be the Death of Me
If you have a feline family member, I’m sure you can relate
Our beautiful black cat, Midnite, has developed the habit of hopping up on my desk while I’m working. She used to take refuge from the dog, Mouse, by sneaking into my husband’s office before he could close the door. Now that she’s found a way to tell Mouse she’s in charge, she’s shouting it from the rooftop.
In the beginning, she’d plop down right in front of the monitor, leaving me adjusting my position to see what’s on the screen. I tried scooting her off, but she kept jumping up. So, I’ve most affectionately let her have her way. I cleared a nice little spot for her, behind the OttLite and amply far enough from the electronics. A decision I’m now regretting.
Midnite doesn’t need a running start — 2–1/2 feet for the typical cat isn’t a problem. Hence, she’d usually walk up beside my chair, look at me, and then take the leap. Recently, though, she’s been taking a running start, frequently scaring me as this big puff of black flies by me, landing with a thump.
I could think of worse ways to disrupt my work. Like the other day. As she stepped inside the office door, she caught the dog’s attention. This prompted her to dart across the room and get atop the desk as fast as she could. But her jump was a bit askew —…
